Have you always wished you had plumper, fuller lips? Lip fillers could be the ideal solution and give you a wonderful boost of self-confidence. If you’re interested in undergoing this procedure, it’s important to know what lip fillers are, what the treatment involves, and what results they deliver. It’s also wise to explore what to expect after lip fillers. Scroll down to learn a little more about this popular aesthetic treatment.

What Are Lip Fillers?

Lip fillers are cosmetic injectables that enhance the shape, size, and definition of the lips. They offer an easy, non-surgical way to smooth away fine lines around the mouth and boost lip volume. The most popular fillers are formulated to mimic the body’s own hyaluronic acid. Trusted products included Versa and Juvederm Ultra XC.

What Does a Lip Filler Treatment Typically Involve?

If you’re interested in lip fillers, it’s important to seek out an experienced professional who offers the treatment in a medical setting. This helps ensure that you’ll receive a quality product and proper care, which are essential to protecting your health and achieving excellent results.

Before the actual treatment, you’ll meet with your provider to discuss your overall health, your goals, and the best method for reaching them. Your provider should fully explain the proposed treatment, including what to expect after lip fillers.

On the day of your treatment, your provider will numb your lips, typically with a topical cream. Then, they’ll use a slim needle to inject the dermal filler into your lips. Patients generally report feeling little to no pain, and the procedure typically takes between 30 minutes and an hour.

What Benefits Are Associated with Lip Fillers?

Lip fillers offer numerous benefits, including all the following:

  • Boosting self-confidence
  • Adding volume and size to the lips
  • Restoring smoothness to the mouth and surrounding skin
  • Increasing the definition of the lips
  • Enhancing lip shape and making lips more symmetrical
  • Improving the appearance of scars on or near the lips
  • Creating a more youthful appearance

What Should Patients Expect After the Procedure?

As the American Society of Plastic Surgeons explains, most people will be able to resume their normal life without delay after receiving fillers. However, it’s best to avoid intense physical activity for at least the first 48 hours. Of course, individual reactions vary, so it’s important to review what to expect after lip fillers with your provider before undergoing treatment.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, swelling, minor bruising, and sensitivity are expected after receiving lip fillers. With proper aftercare, these side effects will generally resolve in a few days.

How Should Patients Take Care of Themselves After Treatment?

For a smooth, comfortable recovery, experts recommend the following aftercare tips:

  • Apply ice to the lips using an icepack or ice wrapped in a clean cloth. This should reduce swelling and ease any pain or itching. However, do not make direct contact between uncontained ice and skin. The ice may stick, which could lead to pain and other issues.
  • Stay hydrated to promote healing.
  • Eat nutritious and hydrating fruits and vegetables. Avoid salty foods because they might encourage swelling.
  • Sleep with your head propped up on pillows to decrease swelling. Do not sleep on your stomach.
  • Ask your provider about pain relievers. Acetaminophen is generally okay. Ibuprofen, aspirin, and other medicines that thin the blood should be avoided.
  • Ask your provider about arnica, aloe, or vitamin K creams. These can help with bruising, but they should only be used with a provider’s approval.
  • Avoid actions that require pressing firmly on the lips or massaging the lips for a week. Examples include drinking from a straw and pursing the lips.
  • Don’t put makeup or other lip products on your lips for at least 24 hours.
  • Avoid high-heat environments such as steam rooms and saunas for 48 hours.
  • Don’t exercise vigorously for 48 hours.
